Fountainhill Avocado Nursery was established in 2020. The focus of our clonal avocado nursery is to produce quality clonal trees according to the Avocado Nurserymen’s Association (ANA) regulations as well as highly improved phytosanitary measures towards further disease elimination.

 

We have consistently been awarded a 5 star Avocado Nurserymen’s Association (ANA) accreditation since becoming accredited in 2022. We are also registered with the South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in terms of the Plant Improvement ACT.

What is the Avocado Nurserymen’s Association?

Avocado Nurserymen’s Association (ANA) was established in 1983 with the objective of plant productivity improvement and improvements in the avocado industry at large. ANA is therefore endorsed by South African Avocado Growers Association (SAAGA). ANA has created standards within the avocado nursery industry to ensure quality, disease free trees are being produced and sold. 

Accredited nurseries are audited annually in order to remain accredited. A star rating is awarded based on the compliancy with the ANA standards. Only nurseries that achieve a 3 star rating or higher are given accreditation. The star rating is as follows:
3 star: 61-75%
4 star: 76-90%
5 star: 91-100%

Important requirements for accredited nurseries:

  1. Saleable trees:
    Have two hardened leaf flushes with the height between 60cm-120cm
    Uniform root distribution and a stem width > 8mm
    No sign of insect, chemical damage or malnutrition
    Free of harmful pathogens
  2. Avocado Sunblotch Viroid Disease (ASBVd):
    Nurseries are required to test all source trees used for ASBVd. This is being encouraged to be tested every year (originally was every 3 years).
    Nurseries perform quarterly tests to ensure no ASBVd is detected on these saleable trees.
  3. Phytosanitary
    All equipment, workstations and surface area to be sanitised frequently
    All entry points must have sanitization points (feet and hands)
    Quarterly tests performed on water and medium of saleable trees to ensure no pathogens are present
